Description

The Antares region holds a mix of reflection nebula, emission nebula, dark nebula, and clusters within the Milky Way dust lanes. At the heart of the scorpion, Antares is surrounded by a rare yellow reflection nebula. Nearby, the globular cluster Messier 4 is easily found with it's huge apparent size. Within the blue glow of the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex lies a hot star forming region among the dark dust lanes.

On the July 4th weekend a rare break in the clouds provided a chance to get out. I drove about 45 miles east of Denver on a dirt road through the plains to a secluded pullout. I could see firework displays from small rural towns in the distance as I set up my tripod and skytracker. By the time I got going, the wind had really picked up and it was still very warm; it was less than ideal conditions. I managed to get about an hour of imaging time before Antares was fading low into a haze and a large portion of those frames were unusable. I would really want 3-4x the time on this but it will have to wait until next year, hopefully mid May or early June. This picture will give me a reminder of a hot 4th of July when my dog and I escaped from the city to get a glimpse of the Southern sky. Here is my version of the Antares region:
